Essential Re-Fathering

                            Discovering our Authentic Maleness

No matter our success in the world, we will never be truly happy until we have claimed and are living from our inherent and authentic nature. This is the real journey of our lifetime. This is Self-discovery.

As men, Self-discovery requires that we move beyond the limited and distorted roles that are conventional in society. So, if you sense that to open to your feeling nature is a terrible mistake, you are not alone in your fear. But, it is just fear. We can and must claim our feeling natures – for it is only with our hearts that we will know love, peace and real happiness.

Setting aside time for healing, personal growth and spiritual awakening, we can heal our traumas and the misperceptions of childhood. But, first we must move in the direction of openness and receptivity. Then we can receive assistance, heal and learn to re-father our own wounded child experiences. This will make room for passionate aliveness, deeper relationships, healthier lifestyles, spiritual growth and joy. For many, if not most men, the overlooked key to this healing is found in the father relationship.

“…the psychological or physical absence of fathers from their families is one of the great underestimated tragedies of our times.”

                         - Dr. Samuel Osherson, psychologist, Harvard Medical School faculty

Research shows that when many of us were growing up the average American father spent 9 minutes a day with his children.

In 1981 Shere Hite’s survey of over 7,000 men revealed that “almost no men said they had been or were close to their fathers”.

It’s time to take matters into our own hands. Its time to re-father ourselves and each other. It’s time to heal, time to live life in greater fullness.

Essential Re-Fathering 12 Steps and Areas of focus

  1. Acknowledging the problem: Exploring the effects of absent, violent or inappropriate fathering.
  2. Authentic Maleness: A glimpse of who we are as men when we express our inner Self, our Divine nature.  Connecting with qualities such as joy, integrity, kindness, empowerment, truthfulness.
  3. Getting truthful about our shadows: Bringing the shadow out of the dark: self-assessment questionnaire, the power of the subconscious, the victim and aggressor roles, growing beyond immaturity.
  4. Addictions: The ego is, by its very nature, addicted and we can’t get enough of what doesn’t truly fulfill us. Without experience of our Self we will never be satisfied. Stopping the medication of our emotions. Doing the work. The father’s role. Twelve step groups.
  5. Clearing Out: Releasing childhood traumas, visualization, awareness, Pre-Cognitive Re-Education, affirmation, Light-work.
  6. Feeling, Grieving, Expressing: Greater aliveness. Learning to go beyond the stifling cultural norm of the non-feeling, non-communicating male.
  7. Guilt and shame reduction: Being with feelings, the healing power of an honest group of men, forgiveness, the power of the Divine, amends.
  8. Self-guided work: Inner child and re-fathering tools, affirmations, journaling, reading, anger-work, breathing techniques.
  9. Working with men: Authentic maleness, models and mentors, silent and active facilitation, giving and receiving, learning to trust.
  10. Celebrating a greater opening to the Divine: Healing with authority and “God-the-father”, the prodigal son returns.
  11. Meditation, prayer, exploration: The sacred expressed through our individual maleness.
  12. Giving back: Helping our brothers, growing through sharing.
